"I'm sure I am going to look back on this period and go 'How on earth did I do that?'.

"I'm not a year out of recovery and I'm recording and doing photo shoots and we've filmed new stuff for the screens for the show. I've hardly stopped."

The 38-year-old has reworked her Homecoming tour ahead of her comeback show in Sydney on November 11.

Minogue had to postpone the Australian leg of her Showgirl greatest hits tour when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in May last year.

Melbourne Launches New Convention Centre

Melbourne Convention Centre ImageMelbourne has launched a new convention advertising campaign to position Melbourne and the new Melbourne Convention Centre in the international market as the place to stage an international convention and experience the ‘real’ Australia.

Using the tag line: ‘On your next convention discover the real Australia’, the advertisements use a creative collage of Melbourne images to demonstrate what the City and regional Victoria has to offer.

“Melbourne’s ‘wow’ factor is not just relying on one individual icon but the variety of truly authentic Australian experiences Melbourne can provide,” said Melbourne Convention + Visitors Bureau (MCVB) CEO, Sandra Chipchase.

The integrated campaign will include advertising, brochures, direct mail and a DVD, and supported by public relations.

“The campaign will launch the new Melbourne Convention Centre to the world and position Melbourne as a premier business events destination,” Chipchase said.

Designed by Spinach Advertising, the campaign was developed following qualitative research to determine amongst other things, the knowledge and awareness of Melbourne and the new Melbourne Convention Centre development in international markets.

MCVB and the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre worked closely with Spinach Advertising to develop the campaign, conducting background and creative workshops.

“Print advertising begins this month and will be used in trade publications in Europe, the United States and the United Kingdom,” Chipchase said.

“Business events generate $1 billion annually for the Victorian economy. The new Melbourne Convention Centre has already generated over a $100 million in bookings and this new campaign will grow awareness internationally,” added Chipchase.

Royal Melbourne Show Opens

Royal Melbourne ShowShow organisers, exhibitors and entertainers yesterday put the final polish on preparations for the Royal Melbourne Show, which starts today.

Thousands are expected to attend today's Discovery Day, which kicks off the 11-day revamped event.

But some things remain the same: show bags, the ferris wheel, the historic Garryowen Equestrian Turnout, and the pie in the sky.

The Live At Night music festival starts at 7pm with bands Ninety Nine, Gersey, and ARIA-nominated Clare Bowditch and the Feeding Set.

Entry to Live At Night is free with your ticket.

The Country Women's Association is among those drinking to a new era of the Royal Melbourne Show.

For the first time, the CWA women will serve alcohol at their fundraising restaurant during the Show.

The CWA has catered for Show crowds for about 70 years. Starting this year, it will offer wine with dinner and stay open for an hour longer than usual, until 10pm, so that customers can enjoy a tipple after a long day spent lugging show bags.

CWA Victoria president Noela MacLeod said the CWA wanted to be modern. "We are chicks with attitude," Ms MacLeod said. "We are in the new premises and it is a new era."

Aussies Leave Thailand Amid Coup Crisis

Thailan CoupAUSTRALIANS bound for Thailand have been stranded in Singapore after their flight was diverted mid-flight on news of a coup in the southeast Asian nation.

The Emirates flight left Sydney early yesterday evening, and was due to land in Bangkok at 1am Bangkok time.

Sydney man Stewart Wallace, a plumber from Ashfield, said he landed in Bangkok about 10pm last night and was waiting for his wife who was due to arrive on the later Emirates flight from Sydney.

“The first thing I knew about any coup was when i walked into the hotel lobby and a local man asked me if I'd heard the news,” he said in Bangkok.

“I couldn't believe him and joked that it wasn't on my tourist schedule.

“Within half an hour, I received a text message from my wife Joann to say that her plane had unexpectedly landed in Singapore.”

He said the crew did not tell passengers the reason for the change of destination.

“The first thing she (Joann) knew about any coup was when I told her,” Mr Wallace said.

“We have decided just to cancel our holiday.

“It's not worth the risk since no-one really knows what's going on.

“My wife has friends in the travel business in Singapore, so I am flying off there this morning to join her and will make other plans for our vacation.”

Bangkok airport this morning looked no busier than normal, with few signs of any military presence.

Rowley Winten, an Australian businessman based in Singapore, was in Bangkok en route to China when news of the coup broke on Thai television.

“I was in my hotel room watching news of the coup when my office in Sydney called me to ask if I was all right,” he said.

“I was able to assure them that all is well.”

Mr Winten, who had been on a business trip, said he had booked a flight back to Sydney later today.

Thailand's military last night overthrew Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in a bloodless coup, amid mounting criticism that the popularly elected leader has plundered the economy and subverted democracy.

Coup leaders have declared martial law, ordering the stock exchange, schools, banks and government offices to remain closed and declaring a provisional authority loyal to Thailand's king.

They also revoked the Constitution and ordered all troops not to leave duty stations without permission from their commanders.

The coup was carried out when Mr Thaksin was in New York at the UN General Assembly.

An Australian family of four from Hobart did not know about the coup until reporters told them about it at Bangkok airport today.

Roger O'Meagher and his wife Andrea, with their sons Gus, 9, and Ned, 7, had enjoyed Thailand two weeks touring and Laos.

“We were out for dinner last night and went back to the hotel around 10 o'clock. But come to think of it we saw a sign up about a curfew in the foyer, but we thought nothing of it and nobody on the hotel staff told us we should stay off the streets,” Mr O'Meagher said.

His wife said: “We've had a wonderful holiday here but I think the kids might feel they've missed out on an adventure.”

Another couple from Auckland in New Zealand Larry Bartlett and his Thai wife Kutchakorn, who are returning home today, said they were ordered out of a restaurant last night.

“We were in a restaurant having a final dinner before flying home this morning, when the police ordered the owners to shut up shop,” Mr Bartlett said.

“They (the owners) were quite happy for us to carry on drinking with other guests, but the police would have none of it and we were told to leave about 11 o'clock.

“This is Thailand and you expect stange things to happen sometimes.”

Nicole Kidman - Richest Australian Woman

Nicole Kidman, Hollywood Superstar ImageHollywood superstar Nicole Kidman is Australia's richest young woman with a A$200 million (HK$1.17 billion) fortune, a new list of the wealthy said Thursday.

The 39-year-old Oscar-winning star of The Hours and Moulin Rouge ranked fourth overall in the annual list of Australia's richest under-40s, published by Business Review Weekly.

The elegant, strawberry- blonde's wealth comes from two sources, the magazine said: her divorce from Hollywood heartthrob Tom Cruise and her own film career.

Kidman, who split with Cruise in 2001, dipped into her pile of cash for a lavish wedding in June to fellow Australian multi-millionaire, country and western singer Keith Urban.

She reportedly spent A$100,000 on her dress and those of her bridesmaids and another A$100,000 on gifts for the guests, BRW said.

Shortly before the wedding she spent A$4 million on an apartment in a ritzy suburb in Sydney.

Kidman earned A$20 million over the past 12 months, the magazine said.

Revenge Theory in Stingray Attacks

Stingray ImageAt least 10 stingrays have been found dead and mutilated on Australia's eastern coast since "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin was killed by one of the animals last week, an official said Tuesday, prompting concerns of revenge attacks on the normally docile fish.

The popular television star was killed last week when a stingray barb pierced his chest as he filmed a TV show off Australia's Great Barrier Reef, prompting an outpouring of grief in Australia and among his fans worldwide.

The dead stingrays have been discovered on two beaches in Queensland state, including two that were found Tuesday with their tails lopped off, state fisheries department official Wayne Sumpton said.

Sumpton said fishermen who inadvertently catch the diamond-shaped rays sometimes cut off their tails to avoid being stung, but the practice is uncommon.

Michael Hornby, the executive director of Irwin's conservation group Wildlife Warriors, said he was concerned the rays were being hunted and killed in retaliation for the TV star's death.

"It may be some sort of retribution, or it may be fear from certain individuals, or it just may be yet another callous act toward wildlife," he said.

He said killing stingrays was "not what Steve was about."

"We are disgusted and disappointed that people would take this sort of action to hurt wildlife," he said.

Stingrays are usually shy, unobtrusive fish that rummage along the sea bottom for food or burrow into the sand. When stepped on or otherwise frightened, a serrated spine up to 25 centimeters (10 inches) long in the animal's tail flares up.

The spines emit toxins that can kill small creatures and cause excruciating pain in humans. Few people die from the poison, but the spines can badly tear flesh and the wounds are prone to infections, including tetanus.

Hornby said people should treat stingrays with caution, but "there is still no need to ... kill or mutilate these important animals."

Australia Gets Tough Qualifying Draw for Olympics

Australia Football TeamAustralia faces a tough group including Iran and Saudi Arabia in the Asian football qualifying tournament for the Beijing Olympics.

But the Olyroos have to account for Taiwan in a preliminary round to even make the main draw.

The 14 seeded teams go straight into the second round but Australia, not seeded as a newcomer to Asian football, must first beat Taiwan.

Coach Graham Arnold acknowledges a tough campaign to keep intact the Olyroos' record of appearing in each men's Olympic football tournament since 1988.

"It is a very, very difficult draw and there won't be an easy game throughout the entire campaign," said Arnold.

"It is however a great challenge and it is one that the players and myself will be looking forward to.

"Both Iran and Saudi Arabia are regular qualifiers for the World Cup so they alone in the second round will be a massive challenge but this kind of competition is part of the benefits in moving into the Asian Confederation."

The 24 teams making the second round have been split into six groups, with the top two teams from each advancing to a final round to decide which three teams go to the Olympics. China has already qualified as host.

Preliminary qualifying takes place on February 7 and February 14 next year.

Second round qualifying will run through February 28 to June 6, 2007 with the final round held from August 22 till November 21, 2007.

Second round groupings

Group A: Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Singapore or Pakistan

Group B: Japan, Malaysia, Syria, Hong Kong or Bangladesh

Group C: Oman, Lebanon, Vietnam or Afghanistan, Indonesia or Maldives

Group D: Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan or Kyrgyzstan, Australia or Taiwan

Group E: Iraq, North Korea, Turkmenistan or Thailand, Myanmar or India

Group F: South Korea, UAE, Uzbekistan or Tajikistan, Yemen or Palestine

Australia is Most Sought After Study Destination

Sydney UniversityOver 80,000 Indian students are expected to seek admissions in various institutions in Australia by 2025, overseas education service provider IDP Education Australia Director Henry Ledlie said on Sunday.

Stating that Australia has become most sought after by Indians for higher studies due to best infrastructure, Mr Henry told newsmen here that it was the only country in the world, which had enacted Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act-- a comprehensive national legislation governing the quality and delivery of education to foreign students.

He said that his organisation has been recognising education exhibitions and holding interview programmes twice a year for the past 11 years in Delhi, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad and the response was encouraging from the students community from India.

He said that the IDP programme was supported by the Australian Trade Commission, Government of Australia and the Australian Alumni Association India. The event attracts over 100 academics and representatives from 43 Australian Education institutions.

This programme will not only be beneficial for students seeking study options in Australia but also those interested in on line and distance education programmes and studying in Australian University offshore campuses in Dubai, Singapore and Malaysia, he added.

Mr Henry said that over the years the number of Indian students seeking admission in Australia was improving and it had witnessed a quantum jump in recent years.

In 1998 the Government of Australia had issued study visas for 300 students and presently over 28,000 students were studying in various universities and institutions and the number was expected to sore to 80,000 by 2025.

He said that to attract the finest Indian minds, Australian Prime Minister John Howard announced a 25 million Australian dollars aid to India over the next five years for bilateral collaboration through the strategic research fund and exchange scholarships.

Australian Universities also have valuable international linkages and exchanges with prestigious institutions all over the world including IIT, IIM IISc, BITS Pilani in India, he added.

'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin Dies in Stingray Attack

'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin dies in Stingray AttackSteve Irwin, the man known around the world as the "Crocodile Hunter" in Australia has died in a stingray attack off the Great Barrier Reef.

Irwin, 44, had been filming a documentary off Port Douglas in northern Queensland when he was killed by a stingray barb through the heart. He was rushed to hospital by helicopter, but he died en route.

Irwin was famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchword "Crikey!" in his television program Crocodile Hunter. First broadcast in Australia in 1992, the program was picked up by the Discovery network, catapulting Irwin to international fame.

Irwin made news headlines in 2004 after involving his infant son in one of his crocodile stunts. Irwin held his son Bob, who was a month old at the time, in one arm while he dangled a piece of chicken over the snapping jaws of a four-metre crocodile.

Irwin is survived by his American-born wife Terri, their daughter Bindi Sue, 8, and son Bob.

Australia Targets Drugged Drivers

Australia Targets Drugged Drivers ImagePolice in the Australian state of Victoria have begun randomly testing drivers for the drug ecstasy.

The force says it has developed ground-breaking technology to detect the presence of the drug in drivers' saliva and blood.

The state government, which already tests for cannabis and amphetamines, says motorists who take drugs are as dangerous as those who drink and drive.

The test is thought to be the first of its kind in the world.

Last year more than 40 percent of drivers killed on Victoria's roads had traces of drugs other than alcohol.

Martin Boarman, from Victoria police, says truck drivers and party-goers will come under particular scrutiny.

Dangerous driving

"Right throughout the programme we've been targeting high risk areas and groups - transport routes with heavy vehicle drivers and places of entertainment where people go to dance parties."

The test is done using a hand-held device to analyse a sample of saliva to see if ecstasy is present.

Further analysis is then carried out in a laboratory to determine if charges are to be laid.

First time offenders face a heavy fine and a six-month driving ban.

Ecstasy is a man-made psycho-active drug said to impair driving skills as users can experience a false sense of bravado and can also fall asleep suddenly.
